This occurs before any other attack so it’s a good way to whittle down the enemy before they can engage in hand-to-hand combat. If an archer unit is next to another unit that is getting attacked in skirmish or melee it gets Defensive Fire. Flying units are unaffected by terrain and always move at normal speed. Ground units move faster over roads and at normal speed over clear terrain. Scout ahead before moving your units to hexes outside of your visual range.

If you move into a hex with an unseen enemy they get a free ambush attack. Flying units can only be attacked by units that have a missile attack. For example if a skirmish unit is equipped with a magical bow that unit will deal missile damage and then skirmish damage and then stop. A unit deals damage in all of the modes until they reach their main attack and then they stop. The order of attack goes from missile, to skirmish to melee. Each unit has one main attack but can deal damage in the other modes. There are three modes of attack, missile, skirmish and melee. Non-mortal units are stronger than ortal units but can’t be upgraded so they eventually become obsolete. Mortal units can be upgraded to the next tier once the appropriate level of research has been completed.

With fantasy themes, it feels like a never-ending story as it is also a never-ending slog to reach the finale.Fantasy General is the third game in the Five Star General series and takes place on a fantasy world with mythical creatures and races. It tries to be both, but without succeeding in either goal. But, it is sorely lacking in what can be considered as a full-fledged fantasy RPG or fantasy strategy experience. Variety for the single-player campaign is sorely lacking, especially once you’ve spent hours going through the motions.įantasy General 2 is not a bad game, per se. The other playable faction is the Empire, but these lords and ladies are only available for skirmish and multiplayer. There’s also a short prequel campaign which has you playing as the barbarians… again. Sooner, rather than later, you might find the experience tiresome. All 30+ missions are from the perspective of the same faction from start to finish. Is this sequel worth the wait? Or is the 23-year hiatus a bit too much? That brings me to Fantasy General 2 - from developers Owned by Gravity but still published by Slitherine.
Having said that, turn-based tactical offerings developed or published by Slitherine always remained a fixture in my library. It just flew under the radar at a time when I had been focusing more on real-time strategy games and first-person shooters. Truth be told, I have never played the original Fantasy General game which came out back in 1996.
